What is WPM and How is it Calculated?
Words Per Minute (WPM) is the universal metric used to quantify keyboard typing speed. Because English words vary widely in length, measuring raw words would lead to inconsistent and unfair results.
Under the standardized 5-keystroke rule established by typing research, every sequence of 5 characters (including letters, spaces, numbers, and punctuation) counts as one standardized word.
Typing Speed Benchmarks: What is a Good Score?
Whether you're a student, software engineer, customer support representative, or entrepreneur, here is how typing speeds are categorized globally:

How does the typing speed test work?
The typing speed test offers both Timed Tests (1-minute, 3-minute, and 5-minute countdowns) and Page Tests (1-page, 2-page, and 3-page full text). As you type, the tool records every keystroke in real time with audio feedback, calculating your net Words Per Minute (WPM), accuracy percentage, and mistake count.
What is the difference between Timed Tests and Page Tests?
Timed Tests measure how many words you can accurately type within a fixed duration (1, 3, or 5 minutes). Page Tests measure how fast and accurately you can complete an entire multi-paragraph document (1 page, 2 pages, or 3 pages) with an active stopwatch.
What is WPM and how is it calculated?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute. Under international typing standards, one standardized word equals exactly 5 keystrokes (including letters, spaces, and punctuation). WPM is calculated as: (Total Correct Characters / 5) / (Time Elapsed in Minutes).
How is typing accuracy calculated?
Typing accuracy is the percentage of correct keystrokes compared to the total number of characters typed: (Correct Characters / Total Typed Characters) * 100.
What is considered a good typing speed?
The average person types between 38 and 42 WPM. A speed of 50 to 65 WPM is considered good for office and creative work. Professional writers and programmers often reach 70 to 90 WPM, while competitive typists exceed 100+ WPM.
