What Is Reading Time and How Is It Calculated?
Reading time is the estimated amount of time it takes a typical person to read a written document, essay, book chapter, or web article from start to finish. It provides readers and audiences with an immediate expectation of the cognitive investment required before they begin.
The calculation uses a simple, scientifically supported mathematical formula based on Words Per Minute (WPM):
Seconds = Remainder Minutes × 60For instance, if your article has 1,125 words and the reader reads at the average adult rate of 225 WPM, the calculation is 1,125 ÷ 225 = 5.0 minutes. If the text has 1,000 words, 1,000 ÷ 225 = 4.44 minutes, which converts directly to 4 minutes and 27 seconds.
